Yesterday, Christopher Nolan let rip on Warner Bros. over the studio’s decision to adopt a simultaneous HBO Max and theatrical release for its next year of movies, with The Dark Knight Trilogy and Tenet helmer holding nothing back in his criticism over the move.
The director whose film will kick off this new release model, Patty Jenkins, has been adamant for much of the past year that Wonder Woman 1984 would stick to its original theatrical release plans rather than shifting to streaming.
However, with the decision now made, Jenkins has weighed in with her own thoughts, adopting a much more measured approach than her fellow filmmaker Nolan and admitting that there was simply “no good option” given the circumstances.
“If you had told me a year ago that we would ever go straight to streaming in any way, shape or form, I would have flipped out,” said Jenkins (via Deadline). “Like I’m not for that plan in general, you know, I’m very pro theatrical release and I will be that again, as soon as this is over. However, this is such a crazy year. It’s such a crazy year. It’s like all of us are trying to figure out with our lives, how to do everything the best we can.”
“And so I kept saying there is no good option,” she continued. “Like when we would talk about it, there was no good option. Wait until when. And then every movie in the world tries to come out at the same time. And you know, there was no good option. I literally gasped a little bit when the pitch for this idea was said, because I was like, ‘Oh, the idea of it going into people’s homes on Christmas Day.’”

As Jenkins states, it’s certainly a nice Christmas present for HBO Max subscribers, although everyone else will have to risk a trip to the cinema this month, if they can find one open.
