Despite being mauled by critics the world over, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 amassed another $330,000 this weekend to cross the $100 million mark worldwide.
This achievement admits Sony’s clumsy comedy to an elite group of only twenty films to attain $100 million worldwide this year. The picture is now only trailing Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie, sitting in 19th place for the year, by $600,000, so could perceivably continue its remarkable rise in the box office charts. Also, this weekend’s box office smash, Spy, made $86.5 million upon its worldwide opening, only $15 million less than Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2‘s total gross, and will surely crack the top 20 in the next few days.
Cracking $100 million is a huge achievement, and quite a shock, for a film openly branded “a gobsmackingly witless excuse for entertainment.”
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is directed by Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain, She’s the Man) and stars Kevin James (Grown Ups, Here Comes the Boom) and Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Marine 3: Homefront).
