Apple TV+ is looking to add more new shows to its growing catalog as a new comedy series is coming to the streamer. The Shrink Next Door will star Paul Rudd as a psychiatrist to the stars and Will Ferrell as his long term patient. Variety reports that Apple won the rights to the series, in what they described as a “highly competitive situation.”
Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, Search Party) is on board as a director, with Succession and Veep writer Georgia Pritchett set to pen and serve as the dark comedy’s showrunner. Pritchett, Rudd, and Ferrell will all also as executive producers.
Inspired by real events documented in the podcast of the same name, The Shrink Next Door follows the strange relationship between a psychiatrist Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd) and his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell). During the sessions between the two, their relationship grows in strange ways as Ike slowly takes over Marty’s life. At one point, Ike even moves into Marty’s’s home and taking over his family business. The series is said to explore how a seemingly ordinary doctor-patient dynamic can morph into a relationship filled with so much manipulation and dysfunction.
The streamer handed the team a straight-to-series order, and there’s no release date set at the time of reporting.
