Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven has set his next project, with the director set to reteam with Elle actress Virginie Efira and producer Said Ben Said for Blessed Virgin, which is based upon Judith C. Brown’s 1986 book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.
Variety reports that the film will see Efira as Sister Benedetta Carlini, “a 17th-century nun who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. A companion is assigned to assist her through these visions, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic affair.”
Blessed Virgin will once again team Verhoeven with screenwriter Gerard Soeteman, who was a frequent collaborator with Verhoeven before his move to Hollywood for 1987’s RoboCop. The two most recently reunited in 2006 for Black Book.
