Percy Jackson Disney+ series finds director for pilot episode

October 26, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan has revealed that James Bobin, who recently helmed the Dora and the Lost City of Gold movie, will direct the pilot episode for the upcoming television series for the Disney+ streaming service.

Taking to his own personal blog, Riordan broke the news of Bobin’s hiring, stating that he “is both a terrific person and an incredibly talented director who checks all the boxes we were hoping for in a partner.”

“James [Bobin] knows the Percy books well. His kids are fans. His humor is wonderful. We are in good hands, demigods, and lucky to have him joining our team. Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes the way we expect!”

Besides Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Bobin has also helmed The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Alice Through the Looking Glass and directed an episode of the Disney+ series The Mysterious Benedict Society.

The Percy Jackson series follows teenager Percy Jackson after he discovers he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. The first two books in the series were adapted into feature films, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. However, due to the second film struggling at the box office and Riordan’s public criticism of the films after they deviated from the source material, the film franchise was cancelled.
