Ahead of the Blu-ray and DVD release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in a couple of weeks, Joe and Anthony Russo sat down with Yahoo! to talk about their plans for the as-of-yet-untitled Captain America 3, which is set to be released on May 6th 2016, the same day as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, obviously.
The directing duo said that the movie will take place “two years” after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will centre around Steve Rogers’ relationship with Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier. “The character was invented for an explicitly political purpose. So it’s hard to get away from that nature,” Anthony said. Joe added that it was important for them to make sure Captain America does not become too disillusioned anti-hero, “his morality is part of his superpower.”
“[We’re] bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier“, the pair concluded.
With Chris Evans’ contract coming to an end with Avengers 3, does this mean they’ll be passing the Captain America mantle to Bucky or The Falcon as they have recently in the comics? You can read the thoughts of Anthony Mackie (who plays The Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) on this subject here.
The Russo Brothers will also be directing several episodes of Agent Carter, which is set to debut in January 2015.
Captain America 3 is set for release on May 6th 2016 and will presumably see Chris Evans reprise his role as Captain America alongside Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
