Back in November of 2016 it was revealed that Shawn Levy is set to produce a big screen musical based upon the long-running children’s series Sesame Street, and now Variety is reporting that the project has found a director in Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel.
Sesame Street will mark the feature directorial debut for Krisel, who has earned three Emmy nominations for his directing work on Portlandia, and has been scripted by Chris Galletta, from a first draft by Mike Rosolio. Details on the studio’s plans for the movie are scarce, but Variety is reporting that it is expected to be a musical.
Sesame Street premiered back in 1969 and recently moved from PBS to HBO, where it continues to air. The show blends live-action, animation and puppetry, and is home to characters such as Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster and Elmo. It has previously spawned two feature films in 1985’s Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird and 1999’s Elmo in Grouchland.
