Get ready to turn those amplifiers up to eleven once more because Spinal Tap are set for a comeback tour in the form of a sequel to the 1984 cult classic, This is Spinal Tap.
According to Deadline the forty-years in the making follow-up has already begun production in New Orleans, with Rob Reiner returning to direct and Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer all reprising their roles in the comedy heavy metal band.
Reiner (Stand by Me) will also once again play documentary filmmaker Martin DiBergi, revealing that he “recently spoke to Marty DiBergi who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll.”
The Untitled Spinal Tap sequel will find the England’s loudest and most punctual band, reuniting for one final concert following a 15-year hiatus, bringing with them cameos from Elton John, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
This Is Spinal Tap starred Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, which despite only modest commercial success upon its 1984 release, is now regarded as one of the greatest comedy movies of all time. So much so that in 2002 it was inducted into the National Film Registry when the Library of Congress deemed it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
