Casting is underway on Blumhouse’s small screen spinoff of the hit movie franchise The Purge, with Deadline reporting that Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High) and Jessica Garza (Six) have been cast as the male and female leads in the USA Network and Syfy series.
Chavarria will play Miguel, “a US Marine with a hard edge and a noble mission. After receiving a cryptic letter from his little sister, Penelope (Garzia), he returns to town on Purge Night – prepared to face the senseless violence in the streets alone in order to protect what he loves most – his family. Penelope belongs to a Purge-worshipping cult. Having pledged herself to be sacrificed at the behest of their charismatic leader, Penelope’s faith is tested when she is exposed to the ghastly realities of the Purge.”
The Purge TV series is being overseen by franchise creator James DeMonaco, and it is slated to launch in conjunction with the fourth chapter of the movie franchise, The First Purge, which opens on July 4th [watch the announcement promo here].
The Purge was released in 2013 and proved to be a solid hit for Blumhouse and Universal with almost $90 million at the worldwide box office. The second instalment The Purge: Anarchy grossed $112 million in 2014, while 2016’s The Purge: Election Year set a series high with almost $120 million.
