Quentin Tarantino opens up about the lack of sex scenes in his movies

April 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The iconic Quentin Tarantino is getting more candid as the years go by. Now, the filmmaker is opening up on some of his biggest duds and why his films lack any real sexuality to them.

The filmmaker recently spoke to Diari ARA, where he touched upon the lack of nudity and sex scenes in his movies.

“It’s true, sex is not part of my vision of cinema,” Tarantino said. “And the truth is that, in real life, it’s a pain to shoot sex scenes; everyone is very tense. And if it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so. If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story, I would have, but so far, it hasn’t been necessary.”

When looking at the work of Tarantino, the filmmaker has often shied away from sex. While Tarantino features couples often, the story’s focus is rarely sex, and he often dives into other taboos like extreme violence instead. Jackie Brown had a romantic scene with Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda, but that’s genuinely about it. One of the only other examples comes from a sexual assault scene in Pulp Fiction, and that’s not the same as anything with love or passion.

As we enter the final chapter of the writer/director’s legendary career, could we see a change from Tarantino? Once Upon A Time In Hollywood saw a softer, more reflective side until the explosive finale, and we could see the next movie from the filmmaker be totally different than anything else.

Tarantino is working on his tenth and rumored final film, The Movie Critic. While many believe that legendary New Yorker critic Pauline Kael may have inspired the 1970s-set movie, the filmmaker has denied those claims.
