Comedian, actor and writer Garry Shandling has passed aged 66, the Los Angeles Police Department have announced this evening. The official cause of death is unknown at this time, but an LAPD spokesperson revealed that they responded to a “medical emergency” at Shandling’s home and he later died in hospital.
Beginning his career in the early 1970s writing for the sitcom Sandford and Son, Shandling rose to prominence as a stand-up comedian in the late 70s and early 80s before creating the acclaimed comedy series It’s Garry Shandling’s Show (1985-1990) and The Larry Sanders Show (1992-1998), which earned him an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe nominations.
In addition to his TV work, Shandling made a number of feature film appearances, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he featured as Senator Stern in Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier – the latter marking his final screen appearance.
