R.I.P. James Horner (1953 – 2015)

June 23, 2015 by Robert Kojder

It is with heavy hearts that we here at Flickering Myth are reporting that Academy Award-winning composer James Horner has died at the age of 61.

In addition to working on films, James Horner also enjoyed piloting, but unfortunately his small aircraft suffered a plane crash 60 miles north of Santa Barbera on Monday morning. The confirmation of his passing comes from a Facebook post by his assistant, Sylvia Patrycja.

“A great tragedy has struck my family today, and I will not be around for a while. I would like some privacy and time to heal. We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road. Love Sylvia.”

Racking up ten Oscar nominations, James Horner has scored a number of highly revered films such as Braveheart, Jumanji, Avatar, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, and Titanic which for he won two golden statues.

Even in death, his work will momentarily continue with three finished films, including the Jake Gyllenhaal starring boxing drama Southpaw due out in theaters next month.

“My job — and it’s something I discuss with Jim (referring to James Cameron in a 2009 interview) all the time — is to make sure at every turn of the film it’s something the audience can feel with their heart. When we lose a character, when somebody wins, when somebody loses, when someone disappears — at all times I’m keeping track, constantly, of what the heart is supposed to be feeling. That is my primary role.”

Rest in peace.
