Oscar-nominated American filmmaker John Singleton has passed away aged 51, with his family confirming that he had been taken off life support earlier today after suffering a massive stroke two weeks ago.
Singleton is best known for his 1991 debut Boyz n the Hood, which saw him receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. With regards to the latter, he was the first African-American filmmaker to be nominated in the category, and also the youngest person aged just 24.
Singleton went on to direct Poetic Justice, Higher Learning and Rosewood in the 1990s, followed by the likes of Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Four Brothers and Abduction. In recent years, he helmed episodes of the TV dramas Empire and American Crime Story, as well as executive producing Rebel and creating and executive producing Snowfall.
