Legendary American actress Mary Tyler Moore has passed away aged 80, her publicist has announced today.
“Mary Tyler Moore passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine,” read the statement. “A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”
Brooklyn-born Moore began her career in TV commercials in the 1950s, before shooting to fame as Laura Petrie, the husband of Dick Van Dyke’s Ron Petrie, in the classic American sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show – a role that saw her winning a Golden Globe and two Emmy Awards.
Moore would go on to win another Golden Globe and three Emmys for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which ran between 1970 and 1977, while she was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her work in the 1980 coming-of-age drama Ordinary People.
