7: Deadpool 2
Deadpool returned to our screens this year for another round of profanity-laden meta-comedy on the superhero genre and as someone who found the first Deadpool movie insufferable, let me just say, that this felt like a marked improvement to me.
The jokes in this one felt much sharper, and the comedy never felt as forced and relentless as it did in the first one. Josh Brolin is a lot of fun as Cable, while Hunt for the Wilderpeople’s Julian Dennison is a riot as Rusty Collins.
The film even manages to make time-travel work, well, sort of.
6: Ant-Man and the Wasp
Tasked with keeping audiences occupied between the releases of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game, Ant-Man and the Wasp managed to successfully shift the tone of the MCU, and still leave audiences with more questions than answers.
More than any other MCU film in recent memory, Ant-Man and the Wasp truly felt like a stand-alone film, and while it won’t end up being one of the more memorable outings in Marvel’s canon, it’s still a wild ride while it lasts.
5: Aquaman
Aquaman is certifiably bonkers. James Wan has taken one of the DC’s most ridiculed characters, turned him into a beer-swilling heart-throb, and placed him right in the middle of a batshit insane action movie.
If it’s in-depth character development you are looking for, then you should probably stay away from Aquaman. If it’s Jason Momoa fighting Patrick Wilson on a platform called the ring of fire while an octopus bangs the drums, then Aquaman is the film you’ve been waiting for.
While Aquaman is not going to be the film that saves the DCEU, it does at least feel like something a little bit different, even if it is absolutely ridiculous.
4: Incredibles 2
Pixar’s sequels have a bit of a hit and miss record but thankfully, Incredibles 2, arguably the most anticipated of them all, has plenty more hits than misses.
The film does a great job of bringing back one of the most lovable families in all of animated cinema and breathing new life into them 14 years after they made their big screen debut.
Pixar knows how to make excellent superhero movies, and Incredibles 2 is one of the most dazzling of the year. Not only is it incredibly funny and heartfelt, but it features some of the year’s most stunning animation, while still managing to stay true to the roots of the original.
