Ready Player One opens with $3.8 million in Wednesday previews

March 29, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One got off to a solid start at the North American box-office, with its Wednesday night previews collecting $3.8 million worth of coins for the Warner Bros. blockbuster.

Box-office analysts have the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s book reaching between $38 to $42 million over this four-day weekend. Ready Player One will expand into 4000+ theatres by Friday, and currently sits at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read what Flickering Myth thought of the film here.

Fighting over second place will be Universal and Legendary’s sophomore frame for Pacific Rim Uprising, the all conquering Black Panther, and the third week of spiritual surprise, I Can Only Imagine.

What do you think Ready Player One will finish on for the four day weekend? Has the positive word-of-mouth convinced you to take a chance on a trip to the OASIS? Let us know in the comments section…

Ready Player One is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse.  But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance).  When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world.  When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Ready Player One is out now and sees Steven Spielberg (The BFG) directing a cast that includes Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Parzival, Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Art3mis, Simon Pegg (Star Trek Beyond) as Ogden Morrow, Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Nolan Sorrento, T.J. Miller (Deadpool) as i-R0k, Hannah John-Kamen (Game of Thrones) as F’Nale Zandor, Win Morisaki as Diato, newcomer Philip Zhao as Shoto and Mark Rylance (The BFG) as James Halliday.
