Red Notice’s Rawson Marshall Thurber to direct Voltron movie

March 24, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Rumours of a Voltron movie have intermittently appeared on the entertainment pages since the early 2000s, but now it appears that a “bidding war has erupted” for the rights to adapt the cult Japanese sci-fi series, with Red Notice‘s Rawson Marshall Thurber attached to co-write and direct.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros., Universal and Amazon are fighting it out mecha robot style for the Voltron movie, and that Skyscraper and Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber is attached. Thurber has come up with a story and should it come to fruition he will co-write the script with Ellen Shanman.

A huge success during its original run between 1984 and 1985, when it was released as Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the series was revived in 2016 by DreamWorks Animation with the Netflix animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender, which has now run for 8 seasons. Despite this success, and their history with streaming record-breaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, Netflix are not believed to be one of the studios vying for the property.

Would you be excited to see a Voltron movie on the big screen, or have you had your fill of giant things smacking each other around in CGI? Let us know by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth….
