Netflix has already taken out half of the Defenders this month with the streaming service swinging the axe on its Marvel series Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and now a new report is claiming that Daredevil and Jessica Jones could also be under threat of cancellation.
Netflix doesn’t release viewing data for its programming, but according to data provided by consumer-insights company Crimson Hexagon to Business Insider, both Luke Cage and Iron Fist saw a significant drop in social media mentions for their second seasons prior to their cancellation.
The first season of Luke Cage is said to have generated over 300,000 Twitter and Instagram posts on its release, with June’s second season managing just 50,000. Iron Fist meanwhile fell from 120,000 to just 20,000 for season two. The article goes on to suggest that with both Daredevil and Jessica Jones suffering similar (but not as steep) drops from season to season, this will likely correlate with a drop in viewing figures.
Nevertheless, unlike Luke Cage and Iron Fist, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones did manage to get season three renewals, and with Daredevil earning plaudits for its latest season which debuted this month, it would surely be a surprise if we don’t see Matt Murdock back for another season (showrunner Erik Oleson seems confident, but Charlie Cox has said he doesn’t know what the future holds).
