Ridley Scott has some very Ridley Scott-like comments for the Gucci family over House of Gucci criticism

Never one to bite his tongue, the legendary Ridley Scott is back with some more comments. And in proper form, he has some spicy things to say about the complaints surrounding his latest film House of Gucci.

Recently, the Gucci family made a public statement about Scott’s latest, bashing how it handles the events and depicts the real-life counterparts to the film’s central characters. The family even went as far as saying they were portrayed as “thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them.”

Well, obviously, Ridley Scott wouldn’t take that lightly.

Speaking with Total Film, Scott let loose with his feelings on some on set issues he faced with the family. They allegedly had problems with Al Pacino not physically representing Aldo Gucci, and the filmmaker shot back with a legit “you should be so fucking lucky.”

“The people that were writing from the family to us at the onset were alarmingly insulting, saying that Al Pacino did not represent physically Aldo Gucci in any shape or form,” says Scott. “And yet, frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world; you should be so fucking lucky.”

The Gucci family also had issues with how the filmmakers behind House of Gucci handled Jared Leto’s character of Paolo. From Leto’s campy approach to the character’s writing, they weren’t happy, and Scott wasn’t pleased with their complaints.

“I think a lot of it is comedic, certainly for the first two acts. Jared Leto, there’s not a lot of information about [his character] Paolo, but there are pictures of Paolo, and that’s exactly what Paolo looks like. We found the pictures, and Jared did what he did and dressed the way Paolo dressed. There’s not a lot of Paolo on camera talking. And so that had to be, to a certain extent, imagined, but clearly, Paolo was a very colorful and flamboyant man. The flamboyance of Paolo was quite nicely captured, and how could that be offensive? We paid attention to not getting too overt if we can avoid it.”

Between his comments on The Last Duel and its box office failure, and slamming superhero movies as “fucking boring as shit”, Ridley Scott is  certainly holding nothing back in 2021.

House of Gucci is inspired by the shocking true story of the family empire behind the Italian fashion house of Gucci. Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder, we see what a name means, what it’s worth, and how far a family will go for control.

House of Gucci features a cast that includes Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci, Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, and Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci. Jack Huston, Reeve Carney, Salma Hayek, Camille Cottin, and Mãdãlina Ghenea also star in the film.
