Having spent the last few weeks reporting the news that Nintendo were to move ahead with their long in the pipeline Super Mario Bros. animated movie, Paramount has confirmed that the plumbers’ biggest pixelated rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, will beat them to the big-screen with a November 15th, 2019 release date.
The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that the SEGA videogame icon will be brought to the big-screen by producer Neil H. Moritz, with Deadpool‘s Tim Miller acting as Executive Producer. Sonic the Hedgehog will be directed by debutante Jeff Fowler, who’ll work from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
Renewing a rivalry with Mario that stretches back as far as the the halcyon days of SEGA Mega Drive vs SNES, Sonic the Hedgehog tells the story of a warp speed hedgehog, who collects rings, performs loop-the-loops, and jumps spikes, all with the aim of thwarting megalomaniac villain, Doctor Robotnik.
Selling over 360 million copies over the years, it remains to be seen whether the concept can be stretched to feature length, although there have been cartoon series and comic books galore for the writing team to mine.
Coins or rings? Bowser or Robotnik? Tails or Luigi? Here we go again.
