Riverdale showrunner rebooting Pretty Little Liars

September 7, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Three years on from the series conclusion, Warner Bros. TV looks set to reboot Pretty Little Liars with a new series which is being developed by Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and is said to be targeting the HBO Max streaming service.

As reported by THR, Aguirre-Sacasa is set to write the script for what is being described as a “new take on the former Freeform mega-hit [which will] feature a new story and new characters.”

Aguirre-Sacasa will also serve as executive producer on the reboot alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo of Alloy Entertainment. As yet, there’s no word as to whether series creator I. Marlene King will have any involvement given that she is now under an exclusive deal with 20th Century TV.

Based on Sara Shepard’s book series, the original Pretty Little Liars featured a cast that included Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell and Sasha Pieterse and revolved around the mysterious disappearance of a teenage girl, whose best friends then started receiving texts from a person known only as ‘A’.

The original series ran for seven seasons between 2010 and 2017, and spawned two short-lived spinoffs, Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, both of which only lasted for a single season.
