Robert Downey Jr. confirms Iron Man 4 on Ellen, clears up Mel Gibson remark

October 7, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Whilst promoting his latest movie The Judge, Robert Downey Jr. was asked about the chances of Iron Man 4 becoming a reality. Downey said that he would only do Iron Man 4 if his friend Mel Gibson could direct the film. Whilst this “ultimatum” left some fans concerned, the actor has now cleared this up, stating that: “It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. “I have other projects in mind for Mel and I – sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.”

Meanwhile, Downey has seemingly confirmed that Iron Man 4 is in the works on Ellen, responding to a question about the movie by saying that: “I know there’s going to be a bunch more Marvel movies and they have big ideas of how to do it best, and you know, we’re in the middle of negotiations… okay, yes.” Take a look at the clip…

This should probablynot be taken too seriously. It’s likely that Iron Man 4 is in early development, but as Ellen DeGeneres really pushed him to confirm that it is happening he may have been speaking out of line, and of course negotiations could yet fall through. It does however confirm that Robert Downey Jr. is still up for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man after Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, and even if Iron Man 4 doesn’t happen, he could still appear in future Avengers films even after the expiration of his current contract.

Do you think this confirms Iron Man 4? Let us know…
