Robert Englund open to return in Stranger Things final season

September 22, 2023 by Ricky Church

Horror legend Robert Englund made a memorable appearance in the fourth season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi horror Stranger Things and has opened up about a potential return for the series’ upcoming fifth and final season.

In Season 4 Englund appears as Victor Creel, a man locked in an asylum for apparently killing his family and gouging his own eyes out. Natalia Dyer and Maya Hawke’s Nancy and Robin visit him to gain information as his story bears similarities to a spate of current killings in Hawkins and he tells them the tale of how some type of supernatural entity killed his family, but was unable to kill him after being pulled out of a hallucination through music. It is eventually revealed Victor is the father of Vecna, formerly Henry Creel and One and now apparent ruler of the Upside Down who wants to destroy the world and has been the series’ big bad from the beginning.

Though Englund only guest starred in that one episode, his performance made Victor Creel quite a memorable aspect of the season. It is also notable that Vecna’s powers share some similarities to Englund’s iconic horror role Freddy Krueger in that they both can control visions, are targeting the town’s teenagers and horribly burnt and disfigured, making the apple not fall far from the family tree.

During a panel at Terror Con, per Bloody Disgusting, Englund spoke about a potential return for the final season since Victor Creel is one of the show’s loose threads, reminding the audience Vecna ominously hinted to Nancy he may visit Victor to finish the job.

“In Stranger Things Season 4, there’s a sequence with Natalia [Dyer] walking through a kind of Nightmare on Elm Street dreamscape,” Englund said. “I heard the voice over from Vecna, my boy Vecna says, ‘Ah, old Victor. I remember him well. Perhaps I should pay him a visit.’ So, they have an option in Season 5 of either killing me on-screen or just telling the audience that Vecna killed me. They did bring it up, but there’s a lot of stuff they have to wrap up. It would be fun for me to do that.”

Little is known about the final season of Stranger Things, but Netflix announced earlier this summer Terminator franchise star Linda Hamilton is joining the cast for the final episodes in an unspecified role. Finn Wolfhard also said the last season “answers an insane amount of questions” while Noah Schnapp teased Will’s story will take center stage once again. It is unknown when filming will take place due to the ongoing WGA and SAD-AFTRA strikes and how many more scripts the Duffy Brothers have to complete before they even consider rolling cameras.
