Robert Rodriguez has revealed that he plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his feature debut El Mariachi by directing another $7000-budgeted film, which he’ll shoot next year.
“I’ll have no crew,” Rodriguez tells the Nerdist podcast, “I’ll just use friends. I’ve got some pretty cool friends I can put in front of the camera. But still, no crew, no money.”
Rodriguez’s Spanish-language 1992 debut was intended for release in the Mexican straight-to-video market but was picked up by Columbia, and eventually grossed over $2 million. Launching the filmmaker’s career, it was followed by the sequels Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, both of which saw Antonio Banderas taking over as the mariachi from Carlos Gallardo.
