It looks like Paramount’s plans to have Star Trek 3 in cinemas for the 50th anniversary of the franchise in 2016 could be in turmoil, with Deadline revealing that Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer Roberto Oci has vacated the director’s chair on the threequel.
Orci had stepped in as a replacement for J.J. Abrams for what would have been his directorial debut, vacating another project – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – to commit to the next adventure for the crew of the USS Enterprise. He will however stay on as a producer on the film.
According to rumours, Edgar Wright (The World’s End) and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) have been mentioned as potential replacements for Orci, and you’d have to imagine that Paramount will want to move quickly to secure a new director to take the helm.
