After pushing back the release of its next-gen Grand Theft Auto V last year to allow for further polishing (a likely wise move given the whole Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition fiasco), Rockstar has now officially announced that the upgraded version of GTA V is set to hit PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
However, the GTA V news has been completely overshadowed by the long-awaited confirmation that work is indeed “well underway” on a sixth entry in the main Grand Theft Auto series, although Rockstar isn’t quite ready to give much (i.e. anything) away about the next chapter of the iconic video game franchise.
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” reads the official announcement. “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details. On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!”
It’s certainly no surprise that Rockstar is already deep in development on Grand Theft Auto VI, given that the fifth entry released way back in 2013. Previous rumours have suggested that GTA VI is being eyed for release in 2024 or 2025, which would mean an 11-year-plus gap between instalments, and at least a six-year gap between GTA VI and Rockstar’s last release, 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 (of course, that’s not so much of an issue for Rockstar, given that GTA V and GTA Online are still generating hundreds of millions per year for the company).
