Ron Perlman joins Transformers: Rise of the Beasts as Optimus Primal

June 29, 2021 by Ricky Church

Well, that’s just Prime as Collider has revealed that Ron Perlman (Hellboy) is set to voice Maximal leader Optimus Primal in the seventh live-action Transformers film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Optimus Primal is the leader of the Maximal team who transforms into a gorilla. He is “captain of the spaceship Axalon. In battle, he is a brave and honorable warrior — loyal to his friends and respectful of his enemies — though he’s willing to do whatever it takes to fight the good fight.”

This will actually mark a reprisal for Perlman as he voiced Optimus Primal in the web-series Transformers: Power of the Primes in 2018. The role was originated in the 90s CG animated series Beast Wars, where he was voiced by Gary Chalk.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will “take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terracons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.” It will be set in New York City, Peru and other countries as it follows Optimus Prime and Bumblebee on their new adventure.

Perlman will voice alongside Peter Cullen, who is once again returning for his iconic role of Optimus Prime. Starring on the live-action front is Anthony Ramos (In The Heights) and Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah).

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) from a script by Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters, who worked off an earlier draft by Joby Harold.
