The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Carol star Rooney Mara has been cast as Mary Magdalene in an upcoming biopic of the biblical figure, which has been developed by See-Saw Films, Film4 and Universal Pictures International Productions.
Screen International reports that Garth Davis (Alice) is set to direct the project from a script by Helen Edmundson (An Inspector Calls) and Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties), and is being produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman.
“Rooney’s raw, brave approach to performances, coupled with her deeply magnetic inner life, holds all the dimensions needed to bring to life one of history’s most misunderstood women – Mary Magdalene,” states Davis). “Having worked with Rooney on Lion, I know she is a once in a life time talent.”
Mary Magdalene is slated for release in 2017.
