Rosario Dawson has signed on to play activist Donna Hylton in A Little Piece of Light, an adaptation of Hylton’s autobiography of the same name.
The film will tell the story of Jamaican native Hylton, who was sold by her mother to an American couple in New York aged 7, and was subsequently abused by her adoptive father. She was arrested aged 19 for her involvement in the kidnapping and murder of a real estate agent and was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment. Upon her release, she found her calling, fighting for the rights of women alongside The Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler.
“We are all looking for the right female screenwriter and director for A Little Piece Of Light.,” rep Dan Pearson told Deadline. “This is a project for women, by women, of women. hat’s how it’s got to go. Donna says, ‘Your voice is my voice. My voice is your voice. And together our voice is powerful.’”
Dawson will soon be seen reprising her role as Claire Temple in Marvel’s Iron Fist and The Defenders, and is also voicing Barbara Gordon in next month’s The LEGO Batman Movie.
