Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of the long-running police reality series COPS, in what is being described as “an edgy narrative with a buddy comedy bent on the order of a Lethal Weapon.”
The script for COPS is being written by Cameron Fay, who recently penned the as-yet-untitled Three Stooges sequel, and will see Fleischer producing alongside John Langley of Langley Films, the rights holders of the TV series.
COPS premiered on FOX back in 1989, and ran for 25 seasons before being cancelled by the network. It was subsequently picked up by Spike, with its 29th season premiering this past June.
In addition to COPS, Fleischer is executive producing the NBC sitcom Superstore, and is also busy developing a sequel to his 2009 directorial debut Zombieland alongside screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
