Over the weekend it was reported that Billy Dee Williams could be set for a return to the galaxy far, far away, reprising the role of Lando Calrissian in next year’s Star Wars: Episode IX, and now we have another rumour about a potential Saga veteran returning to the franchise for the closing chapter of the Sequel Trilogy.
According to the UK tabloid The Sun (so have a pinch of salt a the ready), Ewan McGregor will “secretly” shoot scenes for Episode IX later this year, presumably appearing as a Force Ghost Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Now, this could very well be guesswork on The Sun’s part, but McGregor did supply some brief dialogue for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson also considered using him as Obi-Wan to appear alongside Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, before ultimately opting to go with Yoda instead.
McGregor has also strongly been linked to his own Anthology movie, although the status of Kenobi: A Star Wars Story appears to be in the air somewhat after the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The latest unconfirmed – and potentially fabricated – rumour claims that Disney is still moving ahead with the Obi-Wan film, albeit for its upcoming streaming service rather than a theatrical release.
It would make sense for Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams to add some familiar faces into Star Wars: Episode IX, given the absence of Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. Mark Hamill is also yet to confirm whether he’ll be joining the Force Ghost ranks as Luke Skywalker, and given that he doesn’t seem to have been overly enthused by the treatment of his character in The Last Jedi, it would not be a surprise if he too was absent.
