Although DC Entertainment has already cast Doom Patrol and its leader Dr. Niles Caulder, a.k.a. The Chief, for the upcoming live-action series Titans, it seems a possible recasting may be on the cards for the recently announced spinoff.
According to That Hashtag Show, DC is keen on casting Frasier star Kelsey Grammer as The Chief in the Doom Patrol series. Grammer does have previous comic book movie experience, having appeared as Dr. Hank McCoy / Beast in the X-Men movie franchise.
The article makes no mention of Bruno Bichir (Narcos), who was cast as The Chief for Doom Patrol’s Titans guest appearance / back door pilot back in March. Now it is of course possible that DC could be looking to recast the role with a more established star now that Doom Patrol is getting its own series, but this would be the first indication that DC is looking to change up any of the cast.
The character description for The Chief as he appears in Titans reads: “aA pioneer in medical science, searching the world over for those on the edge of death in need of a miracle. Brilliant, but controversial, Dr. Caulder will stop at nothing to help those he believes are in need, including his collection of strange heroes known as The Doom Patrol.”
Along with Bichir, other Doom Patrol castings for Titans included April Bowlby (Drop Dead Diva) as Rita Farr / Elasti-Girl, Jake Michaels (Designated Survivor) as Cliff Steele / Robotman, and Dwain Murphy (Star Trek: Discovery, The Strain) is set to play Larry Trainor / Negative Man.
