While the vast majority expected Marvel Studios to press reset on the X-Men following Disney’s 20th Century Fox acquisition, fans were thrown a curveball last month when Evan Peters popped up in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision in the role of ‘Pietro Maximoff’ – previously portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but played by Peters in the Fox X-Men universe.
Coupled with the recent news that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is coming to the MCU (with his R-rating to boot!), this appeared to indicate that Marvel was looking to bridge the two cinematic universes via some multiverse shenanigans. Cue wild speculation about Michael Fassbender Magneto appearances and more, until the reveal this Friday that Peters wasn’t in fact the Quicksilver of the Fox Marvel universe, but rather Westview resident Ralph Bohner.
So, here with are with Phase Four underway, and we’re still none the wiser about how Marvel plans to bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe… however, if a new rumour from The Illuminerdi is to believed, the studio has already made up its mind, and is in fact currently developing a feature film entitled The Mutants under producer Kevin Feige, which will finally introduce Homo superior into the MCU.
The Illuminerdi has had a number of reliable scoops in the past, although it’s difficult to put much weight behind this one at present given how little there is in the way of details beyond a title and the obvious involvement of Feige as producer. So far, the trades have all been silent on the matter, and without word on any potential writers and/or directors, if the report is accurate then it would seem safe to assume that the project is very early in the development stage and likely still several years away at least.
