With Star Wars Resistance set to end this month and the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars hitting Disney+ next month, it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm may already be in production on the next animated foray into the galaxy far, far away.
According to a rumour from the podcast Kessel Run Transmissions, work is underway on a sequel series to Star Wars Rebels, which is apparently targeting a 2020 premiere and will follow the further adventures of Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren, who – as we saw in the Rebels finale – set off to search the galaxy for the missing Ezra Bridger.
The report goes on to claim that The Clone Wars and Rebels creator Dave Filoni is involved with the new series in some capacity, although his commitments to the live-action series The Mandalorian may prevent him from serving as showrunner.
Given that Star Wars movies are on hold until 2022 at the earliest, it’s certainly possible that a new animated series is in the pipeline to help fill the content gap alongside Disney+’s The Mandalorian and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor shows. However, it also begs the question whether Disney and Lucasfilm could have kept the project under wraps without more established sources getting wind of it, and so at this point we’d suggest filing this one firmly under “rumour”.
