While Mark Hamill has played coy about his involvement with Star Wars: Episode IX following his character’s demise in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a new rumour has surfaced which suggests that we’ll be seeing at least one Force Ghost when J.J. Abrams returns to the saga to bring the curtain down on the Sequel Trilogy.
According to a “source” for the New York Daily News, Jedi Master Yoda will return for an appearance in Episode IX as “he acknowledges Rey’s success and growth as a Jedi.”
According to Mark Hamill, J.J. Abrams will make the call as to whether Luke Skywalker returns in Force Ghost form in Episode IX, while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has also revealed that he hopes Luke does make an appearance in the next movie.
While it would seem the natural choice to have Luke return to guide Rey, Hamill has been very vocal about his disappointment over the way his character was handled in The Last Jedi, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility that we may have seen the last of the Son of Skywalker. If so, then Yoda could certainly fill in as a Force Ghost replacement, although it may seem a little odd given that he’s had no prior interaction with Rey.
