Russell Crowe in talks to join Tom Cruise in The Mummy as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

May 4, 2016 by James Garcia

Universal is hard at work on building a shared cinematic universe for its classic stable of monsters, having claimed a release date for a third, as yet untitled movie just yesterday. Now, word has hit that the first film in that new lineup, The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise, may be getting some extra star power in the form of Academy Award winner Russell Crowe.

According to THR, Crowe is in talks to join the film as another classic Universal movie monster, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If Crowe lands the role, he’ll play the tormented doctor/madman with the possibility to get his own spinoff film.

The new report is quick to say that a deal has not yet been struck, and that Crowe could back out of talks at any time. In fact, Crowe is the third actor to have been approached for the part, the other two being Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem.

As always, we’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy also stars Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Courtney B. Vance (The People v O.J. Simpson) and Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World). It’s currently scheduled to arrive on June 9, 2017.
