Since its announcement earlier this year, fans have been curious who could helm the epic conclusion to the latest Marvel Studios arc. Sadly, we can eliminate one name from possibly helming Avengers: Secret Wars, and that’s director Ryan Coogler.
With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever demanding so much from the talent involved, Coogler has dived into crafting the project and what lies ahead for the filmmaker in an interview with Variety, telling the outlet that he isn’t interested in Secret Wars and needs a Marvel break but can still helm more Black Panther.
“I can tell you definitively I have no idea what I’m doing next. It’s very difficult because you’re exhausted and emotionally spent, and I’m trying to give [Wakanda Forever‘ my full attention,” says Coogler. “After that, I’ll figure out what’s going on with me. But I think it’s going to be some rest and family time.”
Kevin Feige tells Variety that there haven’t been any conversations about Secret Wars with Coogler. “Well, I would want Ryan to do anything at any time because he’s a singular talent and a great person to spend years with. But no, in all honesty, there’ve been no conversations. We’ve not spoken to him about Secret Wars.”
Feige adds that if Coogler doesn’t return, he would still move forward with more Black Panther films. The Marvel Studios head says, “I go back to what I said when we decided to make Wakanda Forever after losing Chad. This mythology and this ensemble and these characters deserve to continue and will continue after all of us are gone, I hope, and will continue forever in movies the way it has in comics for 50-plus years.”
