Ryan Reynolds ponders Deadpool’s future amid Disney/Fox takeover talk

November 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday it was revealed that The Walt Disney Company has held early discussions with 21st Century Fox about acquiring parts of its operation, including the movie studio 20th Century Fox.

While reports indicate that a deal between the two parties is unlikely, should it go through, it would mean that Marvel Studios would regain the rights to its two comic book properties X-Men and Fantastic Four – and that has prompted Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds to take to Twitter to ponder the Merc with a Mouth’s future…

If this is true, I wonder how the fudge it would affect Deadpool? https://t.co/66RNUDU80S

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) November 6, 2017

It certainly is a good question. Presumably, if Disney and Marvel were able to bring the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU, they would want to start afresh, a la Spider-Man: Homecoming, meaning it’s likely that roles would be recast. Marvel could of course pick and choose certain elements to retain, although that could potentially confuse audiences and muddle continuity. However, perhaps the bigger question is, would Disney and Marvel be comfortable with an R-rated Deadpool?

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as the film’s villain, and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider), Eddie Marsan (Atomic Blonde) and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on June 1st 2018.
