Could we see Deadpool quote the iconic “Ho. Ho. Ho. Now I have a machine gun” line one day? The self-aware meta-superhero character might get festive if star Ryan Reynolds has anything to say about it.
During an interview with Big Issue, Reynolds says Deadpool could have his own holiday special. Reynolds claims Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, co-writers on 2016’s Deadpool and its 2018 sequel, put together a Christmas movie. While it’s never been filmed, it was written and waiting production one day.
“I would love to see a song-and-dance number in a Deadpool movie,” Reynolds said. “Four years ago, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and I wrote a Christmas movie starring Deadpool. But it got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox, and it never got made. Maybe one day we’ll get to make that movie. It’s not a musical, but it’s a full Deadpool Christmas movie. So one day.”
Deadpool did see a Christmas-themed event, as a PG-13-rated version of Deadpool 2, titled Once Upon a Deadpool, was released in 2018.
Marvel Studios isn’t scared of holiday specials, either. In recent months, we’ve seen Marvel Presents give us a Halloween special with Werewolf By Night. James Gunn also returns to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this month.
Deadpool will debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Jackman will return as Wolverine and team with Reynolds for the first time since X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are writing the film, and Shawn Levy (Free Guy) is on board as director.
The as-yet-untitled Deadpool 3 is set for release on November 8th 2024.
