British soul singer Sam Smith has unveiled his official theme song for the new James Bond movie Spectre, which is entitled ‘Writing On The Wall’. You can hear the song on Spotify.
The song mixes Smith’s baritone and falsetto and has a title that likely refers to an image from the Spectre trailer in which Bond’s name is ominously spray painted on a cenotaph.
Smith tweeted that he had been “dreaming of this moment for a long long time” after unveiling the track on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw.
Former Bond Roger Moore praised the song, calling it “haunting and wonderfully orchestrated”, whilst comedian Omid Djalili said the song had left him “in a broken heap”.
Not everyone was so positive about ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, with comic David Schneider referring to the song as “James Bland” and composer Nick Harvey dubbing it “all style over substance”.
Speculation is mounting that the Spectre song could be the first James Bond theme to top the UK Singles Chart, besting Adele’s theme for Skyfall, which peaked at number two.
Spectre is set for release in the UK on October 23rd in the UK and November 6th in the States.
