THR has revealed that Netflix has tapped Sandra Bullock to star in Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic thriller from Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier (In a Better World) and screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival).
The project is based upon Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel and takes place in the near future, with Bullock portraying a mother who along with her two children are part of a small group of survivors after an alien force has driven the world’s population to deadly violence. Together, the three must make their way on a terrifying journey — 20 miles in a rowboat — while blindfolded, with nothing to rely on but the mother’s wits and the children’s trained ears.
Bird Box is set to go into production in August, with Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan and Clayton Townsend producing.
