Scarlett Johansson to play Zelda Fitzgerald in The Beautiful and the Damned

April 25, 2016 by Gary Collinson

The Tracking Board is reporting that Captain America: Civil War has signed on to play American socialite and novelist Zelda Fitzgerald in The Beautiful and the Damned, which is being produced by Millennium Films from the Black List script by Hanna Weg.

The film “centers on the tumultuous and doomed love affair between Jazz Age icons F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre. Although toasts of the town in the 1920s, their courtship and marriage was festooned with jealousy and acrimony. Fitzgerald used their relationship as material for his novels, and Sayre — who tried hard to find an artistic identity of her own and ended up being admitted to a sanitarium — did the same.”

Johansson will next be seen as Black Widow in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in the UK this coming Friday. She is also currently in production on the live-action manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell, where her casting had led to criticisms of “whitewashing” the character of Major Kusanagi.
