Are we entering a new era of parody? Paramount Pictures will attempt to revive the dormant subgenre with a new version of Scary Movie.
During CinemaCon, the studio announced that Sonic the Hedgehog producer Neil H. Moritz will bring back the horror parody franchise, which last saw a theatrical release in 2013. Variety reported on the story, adding that the new Scary Movie will be produced in the fall of 2024 and should hit theaters in 2025.
Reports note that the film is being made as part of Paramount’s first-look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution.
Scary Movie came onto the scene in 2000 with a film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and written by Marlon and Shawn Wayans (who both also star). It also starred Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who would go on to star in three more movies. The Wayans would lose the creative rights to the film with Scary Movie 3, and the franchise spawned two more sequels after that before running out of gas.
Some of the most iconic horror films of all time were parodied in the Scary Movie franchise, including Scream, Saw, The Grudge, and even the Academy Award-winning Black Swan. With horror more popular now than it has been in years, it’s time to see if the franchise can take on the likes of Jordan Peele, A24, and Blumhouse movies.
Stay tuned for casting and production news of this Scary Movie reboot.
