Scream 5 co-director explains how the sequel is influenced by Jordan Peele’s horror movies

December 17, 2020 by Liam Waddington

With the upcoming fifth instalment in the Scream franchise recently wrapping up filming, one of the directors of the film has explained how director Jordan Peele and his acclaimed work has influenced the film.

During the film’s Virtual Production Press Day (via ComicBook), co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin discussed how they’ll continue to reflect on genre films like previous instalments, with Peele’s work – which includes Get Out and Us – being one of their reference points.

“We’ve talked about Jordan Peele’s body of work a lot, because what he’s doing is the closest thing to something that we hope to do, and that we love in terms of, tonally, where it’s fun, and it’s about something, and it’s exciting, and it’s not just one thing,” Bettinelli-Olpin said. “We talked about the visual style of Us a lot when we were talking about this, because it captured something very honest and organic while also feeling like a big, fun movie, and to be able to do those two things simultaneously and have an indie vibe that’s also a big, fun, popcorn movie… That’s what, to us, Wes Craven mastered with Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, where he’s able to walk that line, and that’s the newest thing in that lineage for us.”

While the latest instalment will tonally and aesthetically take inspiration from Jordan Peele’s work, Bettinelli-Olpin has also previously explained how Scream 5 (aka Scream) will be influenced by the late director Wes Craven in terms of the film’s violence.

“Before this on Ready or Not we had this conversation a lot which is like ‘How do we deal with violence?’ The violence in this, one of the big things we got from Wes Craven is the idea that you can never treat violence like it’s happening to someone [else.] It has to always happen to a human being, who has a family, who has loved ones. Who you should care about. And so when you’re in the violence it’s not for jokes, it’s not for humor. Everything around it can be fun, but violence is violence and it should be treated as such.”
