It was one of the most anticipated movies coming out of San Diego Comic Con, and the footage for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad went down a storm by all accounts. As suspected, the footage was leaked online shortly after (see it here if it’s still online) – but what did our staff think of it?

Scott J Davis: Looks promising. Had to truly grasp the look of it of course, but only enhances my intrigue further. Tone looks spot on, Robbie looks and sounds fantastic, as does Smith, but still not sold on Leto’s Joker yet. Sure that will change…
Helen Murdoch: Pleasantly surprised by the footage looks like it’ll have some good action and Robbie looks fantastic. Still waiting to be convinced by Leto’s Joker but I do like the voice he’s gone with.
Gav Logan: I think I loved it even more than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I’m one of those who wasn’t put off too much by Leto’s look and think he’ll do a great job. Harley definitely looks like the star in this.
Chris Cooper: As suspected Robbie looks and sounds spot on as Harley. Overall I’m excited to see. Really enjoyed the Assault on Arkham animated film. If this is anywhere near that we’re in a for a good film, and one that should provide a very different superhero film experience.
Kris Wall: I was all in for this from day one and the bits that I’ve glimpsed so far have only made me even more excited for it. Still not a fan of the ‘damaged’ tattoo but I really like Leto’s voice and think he’s going to be a great Joker.
Andy Naylor: Leto looks promising, and I like the look of Harley. Still unsure Will Smith fits this movie.
Luke Owen (deputy editor): Looks great. Loved the use of Bee Gee’s I Started a Joke (even though the plinky plonkey slow piano rendition of popular song is a bit worn out now). Should be a good, fun movie. Margot Robbie didn’t grab me in the trailer like I thought she would, and Leto sounds like Matthew McConaughey doing an impression of Heath Ledger. Optimistic, to say the least.
Gary Collinson (editor-in-chief): I was really impressed by the footage. I liked what I saw of The Joker, who looks very menacing (rather than laughable, as he did in the reveal image).. It’s a shame that Warner Bros. hasn’t released an official version, as I am sure it would look ten times better than it already does. Between this and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seems like Warner Bros. could be off to a great start with its new slate of DC films.
Anghus Houvouras: The comic book movie I’m most looking forward to is rewarding my faith. This looks bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. And I love bananas. The song choice, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the great character interplay, Leto’s super creepy Joker. I loved it all. The strangest part, for me, was the ambivalence towards Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Maybe it’s me, but she was way too sedate for my tastes. There wasn’t exactly the batshit crazy moment for her. Everything else = loved. This one looks like a game changer, if the game was ‘every god damn movie is now based on a comic book and this one might be slightly different’. Suitable for ages 8 & Up.
Villordsutch: Really not inspired by this what so ever. From the opening of the overly used style of murdering a great song at the beginning, then to seeing Harley Quinn, who I’m still not sold on with the go to actress – of the moment – Margot Robbie, this wasn’t looking good; and then to hear Big Willy talk blunted the whole trailer for me. Finally the slither of Jared Leto at the end can’t, for me, give me the excitement the crowd seemed to show, perhaps in the next trailer we will get that little bit more from him and I can make my decision then.

Much like the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, there is an overwhelming sense of positivity coming off the Suicide Squad footage.
