Sean Gunn is set to play the villainous businessman Maxwell Lord in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC universe.
According to Deadline Gunn, who was so integral to the success of his brother’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, will appear in a number of DC projects in the future. The report states that it is unclear whether the character of Maxwell Lord will appear in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, but he will be referenced in the background in order to set up the the DC bad guy.
Created by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire, Maxwell Lord first appeared in 1987 as an ally of the Justice League, before later turning into a nemesis for Wonder Woman. He was previously played by Pedro Pascal in the DCEU’s Wonder Woman 1984.
Gunn joins David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, and Sara Sampaio as henchwoman Miss Teschmacher.

As well as Maxwell Lord, Sean Gunn has already been cast as G.I. Robot in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, where he’ll also reprise his role from The Suicide Squad as Weasel (Gunn also portrayed Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad but there’s been no word yet as to whether he’ll carry that forward into the new DCU).
