The classic Sega arcade game Golden Axe is set to become the latest video game property to receive a screen adaptation, with Variety reporting that Comedy Cenral has given a ten-episode series order to an animated comedy from co-creators Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad, Napoleon Dynamite).
As reported by the trade, the series will follow “veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.”
Set to feature in the voice cast of Golden Axe are Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) as Ax Battler, Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty) as Tyris Flare, Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) as Gilius Thunderhead and Danny Pudi (Community) as Hampton Squib), as well as Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks) who will play Golden Axe III’s Chronos ‘Evil’ Lait.
Golden Axe is a series of side-scrolling beat ’em ups set in a medieval fantasy world; originally launching in arcades back in 1989, it has remained dormant since 2008’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider, although Sega did announce plans for a new entry during last year’s The Game Awards.
