STX Films has snapped up the rights to the sea survival tale Adrift, which will see Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) directing Shailene Woodley (Divergent) in what is being described as “Gravity on the high seas.”
The film will tell the true story of Tami Oldham, a woman who sets off on a sailing trip with her fiance when their boat is struck by the biggest hurricane in the history of the Pacific Ocean. With her fiance badly injured and their boat in ruins, Tami faces a race against the clock to save herself and the only man she’s ever loved.
“I am very exited to work with the team of STX given the great experiences I have had with David Kosse and Adam Fogelson,” said Kormakur. “While other studios were aggressive in pursuing this story, STX’s passion and commitment to sharing Tami’s story convinced me there was no better partner. Shailene´s unique talent, her strength, vulnerability and understanding of complex characters makes her the perfect fit to play the young heroine fighting for her life.”
“This project was highly sought after and the entire team at STXfilms is thrilled to be able to work with Balt on this harrowing, extraordinary and inspiring story of love and survival against all odds,” added STX chairman Adam Fogelson.
Woodley was most recently seen alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Snowden; next up is HBO’s TV series Big Little Lies, where she stars with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.
