Shazam! director reveals original plans for Henry Cavill’s Superman cameo

September 8, 2019 by Gary Collinson

While Warner Bros. and DC Films were unable to reach a deal with Henry Cavill to have him make Superman a cameo appearance in this year’s DC superhero adventure Shazam!, that didn’t deter the filmmakers from including the Man of Steel in the film’s final scenes.

As it turns out, we only got to see Supes from the chest down, with stuntman Ryan Handley serving as a body double, but now director David F. Sandberg has revealed what his original plans were for the scene should they have managed to secure Cavill’s services.

“He sat down at the table,” said Sandberg, referring to Superman’s high school cafeteria appearance. “They had a brief chat. There was a joke about [sort of] school food and then it ended with Freddy just leaning into him, and it going like, ‘I have so many questions,’ and then it cut out.”

As it happens, Cavill’s future as Superman remains up in the air, with conflicting reports about his continued involvement with the DC Extended Universe. However, with no immediate plans for the Man of Steel on the horizon at DC Films, it may be some time before we get any kind of official clarification on his status.

Shazam sees Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, along with Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard, Adam Brody as Freddie Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield.
