DC’s upcoming Green Lantern series Lanterns has announced two new additions to its cast. According to Deadline, J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) and Sherman Augustus (Stranger Things) have joined Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in HBO’s latest DCU series.
Lanterns will follow the legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan as he reluctantly mentors new recruit John Stewart as the duo embark on an investigation into an Earth-based murder “which leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.”
Augustus and Nicholson will play John Senior, John Stewart’s father. Augustus will play him in the current day while Nicholson will be a younger version. John Sr. is described as “the human embodiment of ‘stubborn.’ In his own reality, he tends to fixate on the past and what could have been.”
Nicholson’s John Sr. is a “key recurring role” so we might expect several flashbacks to John’s youth and how his relationship with his father molded him into the former-US Marine and newest recruit to the Green Lantern Corps.
Chris Mundy (True Detective) is serving as showrunner on Lanterns and executive producing alongside Damon Lindelof (Lost) and celebrated DC Comics writer Tom King. Currently in production, Lanterns is expected to be a part of DC Studios upcoming film universe that will begin this summer with James Gunn’s Superman.
Lanterns features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Garrett Dillahunt (Where The Crawdads Sing) as William Macon, Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) as Sheriff Kelly, Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever) as Zoe, J. Alphonse Nicholson as John Senior and Ulrich Thomsen (The New Pope) as the iconic DC villain and Green Lantern nemesis Sinestro.
